Apple Inc., known for its technological advancements and innovations launched its latest product Apple iPod classic, resulting I a revolution in the field of music entertainment. Launched a few years back, the new Apple iPod Classic had created a revolution in the music world. The brand new portable media players baptized as iPod Classic are capable of storing media on an internal hard drive that is also able to act as external data storage devices. The iTunes software launched and marketed by Apple Inc. can support the user in transferring music to the devices. As a part of jukebox application, it is possible by the user to store a music library in the computer of the user by Apple iPod Classic that can play, burn, and rip music from a CD. It is also possible to transfer photos, videos, games, and calendars to those iPod models that support them. Apple mainly focuses its development on the iPods unique user interface and its ease of use, more than on technical capability. Apple iPod Classic like its predecessors has succeeded in making record sales in the electronic market with in a limited period of sale. It created a record by making a sale of 110 million units’ worldwide with in a short period of launching. It is considered as the best selling media player in music history.

IPod Classic was a result of Apple’s digital hub strategy which came out while creating software for the digital devices like digital cameras, camcorders and organizers. Apple found existing digital music players “big and clunky or small and useless” with user interfaces that were “unbelievably awful. It was then that Apple decided to develop a media player that can substitute the existing music players, bringing a new colour and vigor into it. Apple developed the new iPod Classic with in less than an year. The caption put forward by Apple Inc. was “1000 songs in your pocket,” which was accepted widely by the market.

Samuel Herrick writes about latest mp3 players.
Launched on October 2001 as portable music device, Apple Ipod today, come in a range of varied shapes and sizes with some of the most advanced features to offer. The group of some of the most choicest music gadgets found world wide come with variety of functionalities. Along with the portable HDD-based flagship model of an iPod classic, there are ones in the range of iPod touch. Today, if there are ones like video iPod nano, with ability to show videos, there are iPod shuffle; simpler yet powerful enough to perform.

While the range of current iPod classic models play files saved on to an internal hard drive, there are other models that run using removable flash memory. Thus resulting in small size and increased ease of portability. While connected to a computer, these portable gadgets get recognised as external data storage devices.

To facilitate better listening experience Apple offers iTunes software along with the bundle. iTune software aids in easy transfer of music files to the iPods. The software also comes with a program that creates music library on the computer from which the data is gathered. In addition to playing and transferring songs from computer to the portable device, iTune software can burn and rip music from a CD as well. The same software also aids in fast sending of photos, games, and videos to iPods.

While an iPod is designed to play mp3 files, the series of these digital audio players also supports AAC/M4A, Audible audiobook, protected AAC, AIFF, WAVand Apple Lossless audio file formats. Now watch your photo in any of JPEG, BMP, GIF, TIFF, or even in PNG image file formats.

Several newer versions of iPod can also play videos in MPEG-4 (H.264/MPEG-4 AVC) and QuickTime format. Now if you are in a fix over playing a music in Microsoft’s WMA audio format just add a converter nowadays packaged with Windows version of iTunes. To play MIDI files also, one can convert the same with the help of iTunes’ ‘advanced’ menu. Once after installing a customised firmware onto the iPod, files in any of the open-source audio formats like Ogg Vorbis and FLAC can be played too.

Every gadget comes with problems that are hard to solve. It is not that the problems are permanent but they are temporal in nature. Users who are not acquainted with the technicalities involved in the set face lots of problems. Problems as time passes by become headache not for the users point of view but for the manufacturers point of view as well.

And there is one issue call it problem which in recent times has gained prominence. It is the how to reset or restart Apple Ipod following a freeze.

Well, depending upon the gadget it differs. And it solutions as well. If someone has got iPod Shuffle, the method or procedure is totally different. Moreover, if someone has got iPod touch, the same problem have got altogether different approch.

It is important to note that: If someone’s iPod is frozen or won’t turn on, the reason behind may be the iPod is paused or the Hold switch is in the locked position. If it is so, a “lock” symbol appears on the front screen. To unlock it, follow the procedure : slide the “Hold” switch that you will see to the unlocked position and check the screen. Thats all.

It is to be mentioned, if the iPod concerned displays shows any of the messages like : Connected. Eject before disconnecting/ Sync in Progress. Please wait…/ Do not disconnect. Users must eject the iPod from within iTunes instead of resetting it.

It is to be mentioned that if one knows one’s iPod is frozen or won’t turn on. The steps that has to be followed to reset it vary by model of the manufactures. You can easily tell which iPod model you have if you’re not sure.

Here is one method to reset an iPod with a Click Wheel. The same method can be applied to iPod nano (3rd generation), iPod classic, iPod nano, iPod with color display (iPod photo), iPod (Click Wheel), iPod mini and iPod mini (2nd generation), iPod (5th generation), iPod nano (2nd generation).

by Grigoriy Anoshenko

The ringtone craze extends from fanatics in their pre-teens to those in post-retirement. The ease at which ringtones can be added to a mobile is staggering, and assigning a specific tone to a friend or family member is as simple as clicking a few buttons. However, there is some discretion that should be used before downloading ringtones to keep any “surprises” from entering your mobile, or even worst, your wallet.

Trojans and Viruses Free ringtones, and even those that you pay for are files, identical to those that are downloaded to your PC, only much smaller in size. Your mobile is synonymous to a computer which means that there is always the chance that a virus or a trojan can enter your mobile through ringtone downloads. Check with your service provider to see if they offer protection from virus downloads before your add ringtones that are found on the Internet.

Ringtone-Mobile Compatibility Not all ringtones are compatible with all phones, and the customer (not the ringtone provider) is required to ensure that the ringtone will work once it is purchased and downloaded. Also, be sure that your mobile carrier supports external ringtones, as many compatibility tests found online will verify that the ringtone will work with a phone, but after download, customers will find that their mobile provider disallows the ringtone’s use. Check on the limitations of your mobile provider regarding external ringtones before making your ringtone purchase.

Connection Charges The Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) allows mobile users to seamlessly connect to the Internet and surf the web via their phone. Connection charges to use the WAP varies by carrier, so be sure to verify how much you are paying to browse before logging on to get your downloads. And, as connection speeds may vary, the time spent downloading ringtones can become costly. One of the best ways to avoid these charges is to use the free services (such as in-store kiosks) that may be available through your mobile phone’s service provider.

Ringtone Subscriptions Unbeknownst to most, are the ringtones scams that have emerged with the free download (or even paid download) providers. In these instances, downloads of ringtones automatically “subscribed” the customer into a program whose charges were seen on the customer’s phone bill at a later time. Subscriptions for scams can be flat-fees or dependent on the number of ringtones that are downloaded, and range in cost from a few dollars, to a few hundred dollars in unauthorized charges. In most cases, neither the cell phone carriers nor the subscription companies are required to refund the charges.

By using trusted networks of ringtone providers, most of the problems stated can be avoided or eliminated. Safe bets to ensure that you receive the most from your downloads require that you install virus protecting software, check on the limitations of your service providers, and read all fine print prior to downloading ringtones from an unknown source.

by Brent

You’ve probably noticed the odd format of iTunes music, m4p. This is a protected format and it will only work on iTunes software and on iPod players. The standard format for digital music is mp3 which will work on just about any software or mp3 player. So, why did Apple decide to make their music unusable on other software?

It’s called DRM (digital rights management) and the reason for it is to keep you from copying and giving out music that you’ve downloaded from iTunes. Apple says that it’s all about better sound quality, but m4p has the same sound quality as any other digital music. They just needed a way to stop the free-loaders.

So what’s the problem? While I do believe music piracy should be stopped, it seems unfair that I can’t use my legally purchased music how I want to use it. For those of us who can’t afford an iPod (I have a sony mp3 player, much cheaper) it becomes inhibiting because we can’t take our music on the go. Itunes software doesn’t provide any means of converting from m4p to mp3.

Is there a way around this problem? There are a few ways actually:

Method 1: Burn the tracks to a CD, then open the CD in iTunes and right-click on a song. A Convert Selection option will appear.

This option only works if you have burned the songs to a CD first though. If you try this without burning to a CD first it will give you an error message saying you can’t convert protected files to another format.

This methods gives you 2 copies of a song in your playlist — one in the original protected format and one in MP3. This is somewhat annoying and if you want to convert a lot of music you’ll have to burn tons of CD’s and waste a lot of time.

Method 2: There is software that can convert the files to mp3 for you. I recommend using Tunebite but there are others if you look around. This is a lot quicker and easier than burning a whole stack of CD’s.

Just remember, don’t be a music thief and don’t give freebies to your friends. This article is intended to help you get full use of the music you have paid for and legally downloaded. It’s yours, so you should be allowed to use it how you want.

by Jon Arnold

VOIP is another one of those computer acronyms that stands for Voice Over Internet Protcol. It is a technology that is growing very quickly, and the primary reason for that is that it is helping both residential customers and business customers to save money.

You really do not need to know how VOIP works to use it, but there are some very fundamental things you need to understand. First of all, if you want to use a VOIP service for your home or business, the VOIP service typically assumes that you already have a stable and reliable highspeed Internet connection. The highspeed Internet connection is REQUIRED for VOIP service, but the VOIP service itself does not include the highspeed Internet.

For home use, that might be cable Internet or it might be residential DSL. But whichever of those it is, note the keywords I used above: stable and reliable. Many residential highspeed Internet connections are neither reliable nor are they stable. If that is the case with your highspeed Internet connection, then you have two choices: (1) get a different highspeed Internet service that DOES provide a stable and reliable connection, or (2) stop shopping for VOIP services, because it will not work well with an unstable and unreliable highspeed Internet connection.

In fact, studies have shown that in more than 95% of the cases where customers have called to complain about the quality of their VOIP services, the problem has been with the highspeed Internet connection, and NOT with the VOIP service.

The reason for this is that VOIP makes and receives phone calls using your highspeed Internet connection. Obviously, if that connection is neither reliable nor stable, your VOIP service and voice quality on that call is going to suffer.

What if your highspeed Internet connection is satellite? A satellite highspeed Internet connection is not recommended for good VOIP service. Most satellite services have a monthly bandwidth limitation, and if you do much calling at all, you will likely exceed that monthly limitation with VOIP quite quickly. But even if you do not do much calling, the lag time to go to the satellite and back, which is referred to as the latency time, is going to make VOIP very difficult, and you will not be happy with it.

Remember I talked about the “reliable” aspect of your highspeed Internet connection? For years and years, you have grown accustomed to hearing a dial tone when you picked up the phone to make a call, and that has been extremely reliable. But if your highspeed Internet connection goes down, so does your ability to make or receive phone calls.

If you do have a reliable and stable highspeed Internet connection, there is no reason not to consider installing VOIP immediately. You can even cancel your existing phone line with the phone company after you get VOIP installed, if you want to. That phone line with the phone company is probably costing you about $25 per month, and that is just for dial tone and maybe local calls, but certainly no extra features like caller ID and clearly no long distance calling.

By comparison, most VOIP service plans allow you to make unlimited amounts of local and long distance calls within the continental US, and some also include Canada and even Puerto Rico. They also typically include extra features at no additional cost, such as voice mail, caller ID, calling waiting, and more. And all that still costs around $25 per month, the same as you were paying for just dial tone with the phone company!

The economics of it are there, and you are probably going to have highspeed Internet anyway, so it’s time to check out the possibilities and start talking without worrying about the cost of calling your sister in Seattle and your mother in Denver!

The iPod shuffle can do much more than just play music. Here are a few things you can use your shuffle for, that will enrich life and improve your knowledge.

You can use your iPod shuffle to learn a new language. Since the iPod shuffle is light enough to listen to anywhere, you should take advantage of those long waits in lines to brush up on your foreign language skills. Simply add audio books that teach the foreign language that you wish to learn and listen to them anytime and anywhere without interrupting others.

You can share your music with another when using a Belkin headphone splitter. The Belkin headphone splitter connects into the earphone jack of your shuffle and provides two connections where you can connect two earphones instead of one only. This would be a prefect solution for couples that wish to listen to music instead of boring conversations during family gatherings. Sitting side-by-side, a couple can smile and nod while listening to their favorite band without anyone being the wiser.

A Belkin headphone splitter would also be a perfect solution for families with two teens and a low budget. The teens can share an iPod and the music without the fighting that usually occurs between siblings who have problems sharing items that were purchased for the whole family to use.

You can listen to the songs on your iPod shuffle on your car radio by combining a Belkin Tunebase with Belkins Tunecast II. Tunebase plugs into your automobiles cigarette lighter and has an adjustable neck that holds the iPod shuffle with ease and Tunebase charges your shuffle battery automatically when connected. The adjustable neck will let you position your iPod shuffle at your convenience. Tunecast II is an FM transmitter that you can attach to your iPod shuffle. The transmitter lets you play the songs on your shuffle through your cars stereos. By using a combination with Tunebase and Tunecast II you can have your favorite selections playing as you drive each day, without jeopardizing your safety, or others safety, by listening to your shuffle with earphones on.

The iPod shuffle can also be used to store important data files. If you need to backup important data files, you can add them to the shuffle using iTunes software for safekeeping. Carry your important data files with you wherever you go by simply clipping your iPod shuffle into your briefcase, purse, pocket or shoe.

You can also use the iPod shuffle to help you with your studies if you are a student. Using your computer, record your notes into MP3 format and transfer your recordings to your iPod shuffle using iTunes. Now you can listen to your notes during breaks, on your way to and from class and at night before doing your homework. Studies show that the mind retains information better when heard than information that is merely read, so by listening to your studies instead of just reading them, you will not only improve your knowledge but you will learn faster as well. This not only helps to improve your grades, but it also provides additional free time for you to enjoy other things besides your studies.

by Philip Nicosia

So what’s the big deal about the much-talked about podcast feeds? The hype is that the feeds are the very backbone of the podcast revolution–without those feeds, nobody can upload and download these files. Those millions of music videos and video highlights? They’d be gone, buried in the computers of the people who created them, but inaccessible to everyone else on the web.

So how do podcast feeds work? They are a way of sharing files over the internet. Podcast feeds makes use of a small, machine readable file, that updates the users of any changes like new additions to the list.

If you go through the file, you’ll see addresses imbedded into the code. These “share” the locations of the files to the readers, so they know where to look. (The files are usually read-only or share-only media files). Originally podcasts concentrated on music files like mp3s, but recent developments have paved the way for sharing video files too. Who knows what other kinds of information the future “feeds” will bring?

Each individual feed is called an episode, and can be about a number of things: a the latest routine from a stand-up comedian, a song by an aspiring country singer, a lecture on the best California wines, or announcements about a game and a sneak b\preview of its graphic capabilities. In fact, the types of feeds have grown considerably as more and more groups have identified the capabilities and marketing opportunities within podcasts.

To subscribe to a feed, users need to get an aggregator. An aggregator is piece of software that lets you “subscribe” to an RSS feed. iIt then automatically pulls the files/shows you have subscribed to and utomatically inserts them into your favourite desktop music player whether it Windows Media Player or Apple iTunes. Once the audio file has been added to your music library, the next time you dock and sync your portable music player the files are automatically moved over ready for you to listen to on next time you leave the house.

While choosing aggregators, check what types of feeds they can manage. Some don’t just deal with audio files. You can find a few aggregators that will handle feeds from text based only blogs as well as audio and video blogs. Do a bit of research and you will be sure to find one that matches your needs.

In the future, podcast feeds may be used for a number of purposes besides simply sharing media files In fact, the newer innovations in podcast feeds–the vlog, or videoblog–have become more and more popular. Even media greats such as BBC have used it to share some of its news content. Some analysts predict that the feed system could also be used to share software updates, or any of a myriad of other file types. For now, however, podcasting is dominated by small audio and video files, but with the increasing popularity and interest in this new medium, it will be interesting to see what kind of innovations we will see in the next few years.

By Gabriel J. Adams

Digital media has revolutionized the world of media – digital media is highly portable, easily sent or transferred. Sometimes, though, the many different file formats can leave one somewhat confused. In this article, we’ll go over a few of the most common file formats.

Wave format – *.wav
The Microsoft wave format is a lossless, usually un-compressed audio format. Advantages of the wav format include is cross platform compatibility and ease of editing in various programs. The main disadvantage is a wave files large size.

MP3 format – *.mp3
The MP3 format is the most widely used audio format on the internet. An MP3 file has very good quality in relation to its file size. When creating an MP3 file, you can choose what quality level to save the file as. The MP3 format is cross-platform, and compatible with nearly all media applications.

MPEG – varies, often *.mpg
The MPEG is not a single file format, but rather a “video and audio encoding standard”. There are quite a few different MPEG standards, MPEG-1 and MPEG-4 being the most commonly used for the average consumer.

Windows Media Video – *.wmv
The Windows Media Video format is a common media format for internet usage. It is easily created using Windows Movie Maker (which comes free on any windows computer.) Windows Media Videos can be created using a wide variation of quality settings.

Windows Media Audio – *.wma or *.asf
The Windows Media Audio format is the second most popular media format, second only to Mp3. It is very similar to MP3, except that it supports DRM (Digital rights management).

Quicktime Movie – usually *.mov
The Quicktime Media formats all have a serious disadvantage, in that very few programs support them. You must have Quicktime player to play them, and only a very few programs can edit them. They are far less flexible than many other formats.
